Preventing Alcoholism Essay -- Public Health

Introduction Alcoholism affects all elements of health. Overuse of alcohol affects physical health as it affects the functioning of the liver-colored mental health as it affects the ability to think clearly and coherently emotional health as it affects the ability to recognise and express emotions correctly. Social health is affected as alcohol may affect a persons ability to create and maintain relationships, finally and most importantly it affects social health as the individuals actions can have an adverse affect on everyone around them.Alcohol related injuries and diseases are the cause of 207, 800 National Health value (NHS) admissions in 2006 compared to 93, 500 in 1996. This increase of more than 100% justifies my health publicity topic. Health promotion to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed by the oecumenical public could lead to less people admitted to hospital because of falls due to drunkenness, increased liver health, decreases in the number of cases of coronary he art disease, liver disease, hypertension, STIs and unwilled pregnancy., The locations chosen were the Accident and Emergency Unit in Bradford Royal Infirmary and a topical anaesthetic GP. I chose these locations as I felt they were relevant to the promotion of reducing alcohol consumption. If a person fell or was involved in violence while intoxicated, presumably the friends and relatives of potential patients would be in the hazard and emergency unit while waiting for their love one to be treated. They may pick the leaflet up and recognise the quiz involved relates to their loved one and urge them to get help or at least enquire with one of the local help groups. The other leaflet was taken from the local health centre, people who are attending would pr... ...hold a health fair with passs providing people with information on the adverse affects of drinking, for example a stall taking pictures of peoples faces and then showing the ageing effects binge drinking has on their app earance.Works Cited1.http//news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7414322.stm Accessed on 04/12/2010 2.http//www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassetts/documents/digitalasset/dh_104854.pdf Accessed on 06/12/20103.http//www.nhs.uk/Livewell/alcohol/Pages/Effectsofalcohol.aspx Accessed on 01/12/20104.http//www.dhsspsni.gov.uk/new_strategic_direction_for_alcohol_and_drugs_(2006-2011).pdf Accessed on 07/12/20105.http//www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/documents/digitalasset/dh_079327.pdf Accessed on 07/12/2010 6.http//www.euro.who.int/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/112896/E93197.pdf Accessed on 07/12/2010

Models of God, Humanity, and Nature My Experiences, Thoughts, and Criti

Models of God, Humanity, and Nature My Experiences, Thoughts, and Critical Analyses I ask a lot of questions Im a curious person. I formerly asked my mom why people die, why there are bad things in the earthly concern if God is so good and all-powerful. Her response was that we just couldnt really understand why God does anything because we cant comprehend Gods master plan. Im sure that she was right, but that response is not very satisfying to a curious little boy. I saw an inconsistency in my understanding of reality, and I wanted to get things straight. I guess this little anecdote begins to illustrate a couple of my basic life principles. A concise explanation of how I look at the world is just this We humans, as finite beings, use models to understand complex things God, Nature, Humanity and in doing so must simplify things. Theres nothing misuse with this simplification, as long as we know we are doing so and why. Our models of these complex things can be based on a number of things usually logic, evidence, and our experiences (Im probably exluding a powerful one, namely tradition). These varying models of reality, however, must be internally and externally consistent that is, with themselves and with other models used by a wiz person. When the models used by a person are internally or externally inconsistent with themselves or with logic, evidence, or experiences, the first reaction is probably mix-up (or maybe anxiety), but in the continued search for consistency, one can arrive at further insight and a desired level of puff in oneself and the way one views reality. I guess this is sometimes called the search for the meaning of life, although thats a rather grand phrase for ... ... Humanity, and Nature are inter-connected internally and externally, I must work to understand these relationships, and in doing so, I must work to maximize the enjoyment and well-being of all things related to me, right away and indirectly, consciously and unconsciously. Additionally, I must treat all manner of things (entities perhaps) as subjects, rather than objects, recognizing that each has a level of being and enjoyment that it can attain, with the wait on of me and the rest of the world. I must work to avoid and eliminate violence of all forms by using memory, empathy, imagination, and true forgiveness to short-circuit the cycle. If I bonk my life in a continual state of change, using creative, responsive, and responsible love persuasively to acheive a higher level of good, then I volition be living in a way thats consistent with process theologys Christianity.

Religion and State Sovereignty :: social issues

Religion and State SovereigntyThe influence of religion on humankind can be traced back to the low gear records of history. Religion has served as a pillar of strength to some and binding chains to others. There are vast amounts of information and anthropological studies revealing the fundamental interaction of religion and humankind. However, for the purposes of this paper, the time periods of study will be broken up into three sections. Each section will give a general description of how religion affected the institution of the state and its Sovereignty in a Euro-centric perspective. The first period is the early period, which will encompass from Christianity and the Roman Empire to the gothic times (approx. 311 to 1100 A.D.). The second period will include the Renaissance, the Reformation to the Treaty of Westphalia (1101 to 1648 A.D.). The third and increment of history will range from 1649 to 1945 A.D. The date 311 A.D. marks the matter of the Edict of Toleration for Christi ans. This date is important because it symbolizes national acceptance of Christianity, and planted its roots as a political institution. Later the Roman Empire on the verge of internal collapse acknowledged the importance of Christianity and used it to hold together the remnants of it former self. This adoption of Christianity took form and eventually became the Catholic church. The church became intermingled with political sympathies and became a strong entity. The policies delivered from the church had more authority than the local rulers and magistrates of the developing feudal system. For example, St. Augustine wrote about war and what justified its enactment against fellow men. This policy was followed and adhered to for hundreds of eld after St. Augustine wrote it. Another example, is the use of the Bible as a guideline for establishing governing systems. Scripture portrayed God as choosing the king of the people. The pope, being Gods model was then given the authority to cr own the king. This crowning process gave the pope large influence in the political arena. This ritual continued for a minute of centuries. The Crusades, which occurred around 1100 A.D., played a crucial role in challenging the churchs authority. The pope identifying the spread of Islam as evil requested all of Europe get on on a Crusade to defeat the infidels. As the battles were fought, great treasures were found in the form of books and knowledge. These books were crude translations of old Greek texts, containing information which would eventually bring the waning of Church authority in the future.

Acceleration/Velocity Acceleration and upper are mostly dependent on the number of dogs, the quality of the dogs, and how substantially the dogs fill been trained, barely it also can depend on friction and inertia. The lager mass an object has the the more weight it has and the more inertia it has. metric weight unit effects speedup by increasing friction. Friction is f = N where is the coefficient of friction, N is the normal wildness, and f is friction. The normal crush is equal to mass time gravity assuming no other downward violences are applied. Therefore the more weight in both sled gear and musher the dogs have to haulage the lower the velocity and the slower the acceleration will be due to friction between the runners and the ground. Inertia effects acceleration because inertia is the tendency of objects to aether stay at rest or stay in motion. In this case since the point is to move we are more concerned about staying at rest. When starting the dogs have to pull harder to get the sled moving then they do to keep it moving to both overcome the effects of inertia and to change over the fiction from passive friction to kinetic friction.Force/WorkForce is necessary to start all motion, and in the presence of friction force is inevitable to maintain a constant velocity. In mushing a vast majority of the force comes from the dogs, and depending on the musher as a small amount to no force comes from the musher (assuming flat terrain).mathematically F = ma where F is force, m is mass, and a is acceleration. this tells us that if the velocity is constant then the sum of the forces equals 0(F = 0). this doesnt mean the dogs arent applying any force it just nub that they are only applying enough force to over come any friction that might be resting the forward motion. The dogs apply this force by wrench on the tug lines which leads to a gangline which is attached to the sled. some mushers place a shock absorber between the s led and the gangline to both ease jolts from the dogs accelerating from a stop and to subject the jolt on the dogs from large bumps in the trails.WorkThe dogs are only doing work when they are accelerating because W = Fd where W is work, F is force, and d is distance.Physics of leaper Mushing sport Physics Dogs Dog RacingAcceleration/Velocity Acceleration and velocity are mostly dependent on the number of dogs, the quality of the dogs, and how well the dogs have been trained, but it also can depend on friction and inertia. Alfred Stieglitz Essay -- Biography Biographies Essays

Alfred StieglitzWorks Cited MissingAlfred Stieglitz was an influential photographer who spent his life fighting for the recognition of picture taking as a valid art form. He was a pioneering photographer, editor and gallery owner who played pivotal role in defining and shaping modernism in the United States. (Lowe 23). He took pictures in a time when photography was considered as only a scientific specialness and not an art. As the contr e realplacesy over the art value of photography became widespread, Stieglitz began to fight for the recognition of his chosenmedium. This battle would last his whole life. Edward Stieglitz, father of Alfred, was born in Germany in 1833. He grew up on a farm, loved nature, and was an artist at heart. Legend has it that, independent and strong willed, Edward Stieglitz ran away from home at the age of sixteen because his mother insisted on upon starching his shirt after he had begged her not to (Lowe 23). Edward would later meet Hedwig Warner and th ey would have their first son, Alfred. Alfred was the first of six born to his dad Edward and mom Hedwig. As a child Alfred was remembered as a boy with thick black hair, large dark eyes, pale delightful skin,a delicately modeled mouth with a strong chin (Peterson 34). In 1871 theStieglitz family lived at 14 East 60th street in Manhattan. No buildings stoodbetween Central Park and the Stieglitz family home. As Stieglitz got quondam(a)he started to show interest in photography, posting every photo he couldfind on his bedroom wall. It wasnt until he got older that his photographycuriosity begin to take charge of his life.Stieglitz formally started photography at the age of nineteen, during his firstyears at the Berlin Polytechnic School. At this time photography was in itsinfancy as an art form. Alfred learned the fine arts of photography bywatching a local photographer in Berlin working in the stores dark room. After making a few pictures of his room and himself, he enrolled in apho tochemistry course. This is where his photography career would begin. His earliest macrocosm recognition came from England and Germany. It began in1887 when Stieglitz won the first of his many first prizes in a competition. The judge who gave him the award was Dr. P.H. Emerson, then the mostwidely known English advocate of photography as an art (Doty 23). Dr.Emerson later wrot... ...raphers. At the turn of the century, a new class of creative individuals, called painter-photographer emerged. This group fulfilled Stieglitz s dream for intensephotography. Its presence provided the movement with individuals whowere trained in the established arts and who legitimized the artistic claims of pictorial photography by the fact that they were willing touse the photographic medium. The very term painter photographer wasmade up in reference to Frank Eugene who worked simultaneously withStieglitz in media for a decade. Eugene attended a German fine artsacademy, and painted theatrical portraits of the United States. In 1889 hemounted a solo exhibition of pictorial photographs at the Camera Club of refreshful York, which, pointedly, was reviewed in Camera Notes as paintingphotography (Norman 23). In conclusion Stieglitzs fight for photography developed into new ideas forfuture generations. He continued to claim his own experiments and todefend the work of others also breaking new ground. The magazines heedited, like the galleries he founded, swiftly became dynamic points ofcontact between artist and public and a battleground for new ideas.

Fernando, 16, Finds a Sanctuary in Crime Essay -- Fernando Morales Cas

Research indicates that a combination of adverse socio-economic factors such as poverty, scurrilous or neglectful parents, and living in a violent environment, along with personal vulnerabilities such as impulsivity, puts a child at risk for criminality and detestation (Barnet & Barnet, 1998). Fernandos story depicts how individual factors interact with environmental factors to shape an individuals life. Social influence Family and neighborhoodResearch shows that risk for crime behavior is worsened by poverty and lack of positive influences like a loving father, good neighbors or a teacher willing to cranial orbit out to the troubled child. (Barnet& Barnet,1998). A stable social environment gives the child the emotional security he requires, especially when he begins to explore his world (Lederer, 2010). Fernando lacked a stable social upbringing and received an early image to violence through physical abuse from his father and witnessing events like uncle hitting his grandmother . Elliot (1994) pointed out that these forms of exposure to violence during childhood increase the risk of violent behavior during adolescence by as much as 40 percent. Loebar et al. (1986) noted that children who go on to hold in persistent antisocial behavior are likely to have felt the effects of such parental behavior as harsh, inconsistent discipline, piteous supervision, lack of involvement or rejection. The message that Fernandos fathers abusive behavior communicated was that anger is a weapon and the willingness to harm confers status and compels jimmy (Barnet & Barnet, 1998). The effect of living in a high crime neighborhood had a devastating effect on Fernandos upbringing, which was already marked by abuse and neglect. Fernando was pres... ....). NY Jason Aronson. Cda Competency Goal 5

I do my part to maintain a well run purposeful program, responsive to actor contends. On their first day in our program, I make an effort to meet and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations or modifications to better service their children. I also ask the children which games they enjoy, and see if they gather in any questions for me about the program. This gives them an opportunity to know we have familiar activities that they are used to, gives them a chance to share their fears and worries about the program, and they also to get to know me a little better. With this information from the children, parents and our coach, the counselors and I pop off together as planners, getting our weekly schedules for the children and taking turns delegating the activities. We come up with our own plans and put them together to form a enriched learning program. I attend monthly meetings, learning new ways t o better service our clients, help each other and work together as a group. Our director is mostly our organizer, determining what our needs are. We discuss major issues such as safety and abuse, making me well aware of my responsibilities. As part of a co-op co-worker, I do my psycheal best and help other counselors when they need assistance. I fill in for counselors if they need the day off and I am pretty good about schedule changes. We usually meet up before our day starts and talk about any issues we are having and try to begin the best solutions for them. For our program to run smoothly, we must have all our paperwork in order. This includes organization and documentation of records. We do not have one set person for recordkeeping, but we all take part in keeping our paperwork up to date and properly put away. We have filing cabinets which contain copies and some originals of attention sheets, bus rosters, allergy lists and medications, medical forms, daily log book, acciden t/incident reports, check payment logs and our own personal employee files. We fill out various forms on a daily basis and we must have everything signed and properly filed by the end of the day.

Language Acquistion Theories Essay

Bridging two worlds Reading comprehension , extended language instruction , and the English language learner Name University Introduction Many students in American schools today speak English as a foreign language . The English language learner (ELL ) fancys that English contains words and phrases that may seem perplexing because of the disparity between the true(a) and figurative meanings . These words and phrases are use in everyday conversations by intrinsic speakers but ELL students find them hard to decrypt not only because of their figurative meanings but because of the various meanings one figurative word or phrase could contain depending on the context by which it is used .The inability to interpret figurative language leads to a breakdown in text comprehension which , in turn can frustrate readers and discourage them from continue the reading task (Palmer Brooks , 2004 Figurative language instruction The article discusses the case of Alejandro , an ELL student , to illustrate how and why ELL students find it difficult to understand figurative language in English . His teacher found Alejandro to be timid and withdrawn in class because of a lack of confidence in parley with the language . As a result , he disliked reading and writing although he developed literal listening skills .The results of his Figurative Language recitation Test confirmed his weakness in interpreting figurative language . His teacher then designed a scaffolding plan involving several instructional strategies which include the following explicit instruction , connections to the real world , dialogue in context , modeling and independent practice , visualization and the use ofthe native language (Palmer , Miller Leclere , 2006 . The first flavour of the strategy involved a 3-step process by Simmons Palmer (1994 ) for finding meaning in figurative language . The teacher first identifies the figurative language in a written text , determine if the literal meaning in the t ext makes sense , then find the intended meaning of the figurative language expression . Through a series of questions the teacher leads the student towards the intended meaning . A fourth step is added to the 3-step process wherein which the figurative sayings are connected to real-life experiences of the student .Teachers define the various forms of the figurative language and contextualize them . Daily interaction and practice with the student , through twain oral and written activities , are encouraged for the student to gain command of the newly-learned concepts . Another helpful strategy might be drawing both literal and figurative interpretations of the figurative expressions . Most children certainly relate more to visual imagery in figurative language . Finally , the primary language of the students should too be encouraged instead of dismissed during the teaching process .Second language students who study in bilingual programs perform better than those in non-bilingual programs . It as well encourages students to understand the differences between their two languages , especially with regard to figurative language . Conclusion The strategies explained in the article look simple enough and can be practiced by any teacher handling classes with ELL students . They are practical and project been proven effective . The steps outlined in the article have actually

Big Bad Burger

The Brain Behind the Big, Bad Burger Section 1 Analysis Most Americans will consume any pabulum regardless of the calories, nutritional value and health related consequences. The Brain behind the Big, Bad Burger article mentions the importance of use a Business Intelligence establishment (BIS) which provides them with insights, not just mountains of selective information (Levison, 2005). Business Intelligence gets its strength from being able to pull data from disparate sources store it for use in a loosely coupled way, and then pull it out in an accurate and meaningful way.Organizations can pull data from customer surveys and sales reports however, this information is trifling without a framework. Jeff Chasney, CKES CIO clarified this point further by stating Theres nothing worse, in my opinion, than a business intelligence strategy that reports changes on a periodic basis, he says, because those systems dont provide any context as to what factors are influencing those changes .Without that context, you dont know whether the data is good or bad its just useless (Levison, 2005). BIS gathers information from respective(a) data points in the connection to create multifaceted contextual statistics for better decision making. For example, BIS helped CKE determine if the Thickburger was actually contributing to increases in sales at restaurants or if it was just cannibalizing sales of other, lesser burgers. CKE Thickburger in fact did increase their sales it was selling like gangbusters. The success was measured through a variety of data points including cost of production, average unit volume compared with other burgers, total sales for each of the test stores, and the contribution of that menu item to total sales (Levinson, 2005). The whale Thickburger exceeded expectations in test market, and this is why CKE decided to roll it out nationwide. Section 2 Summary of Discussion Questions 1. BIS add values to CKP by focusing on the companys most important act indicators which included sales and cost of sale, historical and forward-looking business trends.BIS uses econometric models to provide context which explains performance. By having this information the company is more agile and responsive to improve making decisions and finding problems areas to correct and take new directions in the rapidly changing fast-food industry environments. 2. Some tips for using BIS is for strategic decisions such as what new products to add to menus, which dishes to remove and which underperforming stores should be closed. BIS can be used for tactical matters like renegotiating contracts with food suppliers and identifying opportunities to improve ineffective processes.BIS can also help improve the infrastructure of the supply chain. BIS is an analytical tool that helps executives make better decisions. It is important that we pay attention to data gauge and integrity to make sure that we are not basing our judgment on erroneous data. I will also sugges t devising key performance metrics (KPIs) that are most relevant to the business to examine the deviations that are causing losings to the operations and locate opportunities areas to grow and take advantage of. sensation last tip which is very important is to take into account users feelings, and address their concerns up front. The success of the BI systems is user acceptance and without user acceptance, companies will nullify time and money establishing a Business Intelligence System. 3. The Monster Thickburger was a good idea because it increased sales at restaurants and it narrowed its overall losses and even turned a profit in 2003. As long as you have an idea of what information you are looking for a system can be implemented in order to find that information and make sense of it. References Levinson, Meredith. (2005). Columbian Exchange in America and Europe Essay

The Columbian Exchange had dramatic demographic movements in twain the Americas and europium. One major factoring concerning both of the two regions was the spread of new diseases create a decline in the growth of both the Americas and Europes population. However, the impact tended to be much more negative for the Americans. by dint of the Columbian exchange the Europeans brought multiple new diseases to the Native American population, including small pox.The coming of these diseases had such a striking influence and caused the population to decrease so much it became known as the great dying. On the other hand, new diseases were being brought to Europe as thoroughly from European sailors after intermixing with natives. The main disease being brought was lues. Although not necessarily as harmful as the diseases that killed off the current populations of the Americas syphilis caused a major problem in the population growth of further centuries due to the infertility problems that came along with syphilis.Another demographic change brought along by the Columbian exchange was that of the intermixing of cultures and decline in 100% native citizens, primarily in the Americas with coming of the Europeans. The Columbian exchange brought little Americans back to Europe causing little intermixing. However with the coming of Spanish into Mexico and Peru, a new population of mixed-race emerged, otherwise known as mestizo, which soon became a common feature of compound socities. Another factor that the Columbian Exchange brought to Europe and the Americas was the introduction of new farming(a) products. For, the Americas this meant the bringing of new crops such as wheat and barley to be grown, yet not necessarily immediately change state a staple of ones diet, though for Europe new agricultural products brought a lasting environmental effect on their dry hard to grow soil. With the introduction of products such as tomatoes, tobacco, and especially potatoes new p roducts were able to be grown in these hard living areas and certain environmental factors that once held societies back from population growth were now being put to use for the erupt of the region. In addition to agriculture making an environmental impact the coming of new livestock also had a lasting effect on the Americas. Through the exchange, Europeans brought cattle, horses, and pigs to the Americas all thriving in the environment and soon become very pro tapnt and numerous in their new surroundings, soon becoming associated with their new habitat. On the contrary, little livestock was brought back from the Americas creating little change in the livestock and indigenous species of the European region. One more environmental effect due to the Columbian exchange, was the Columbian exchanges impact on the over extensive mining of silver in the Americas. This mining led to deforestation and acid mine drainage led to a decline in the population os species in nearby aquatic habtitats . Not to mention, having the devastating demographic impact on the Americas in the aspect that these regions where silver as mined lost many men, due to the harsh and risky working conditions set in the mines just to aspirate silverFrom 1450 to 1750, the Columbian exchange brought new ideas, life and diseases to Europe and the Americas leaving lasting demographic and environmental impacts, however with the rise of mercantilism in Europe and their eager desire to integrate their society into the Americas a more negative and dramatic effect was placed on the surroundings and growth of the population..

The Role of Oracles and Dreams in Herodotus’ the History

usChristina Bramanti October 5, 2012 CLAS 20105 The Role of Oracles, and Dreams in Herodotus The History Throughout Herodotus The History, Oracles, and trances picnic an important role. trance the gods put up almost no presence throughout the throw, the Oracles and/or dreams are linked to many of the major events. We first encounter the Oracles in Book I, when Croesus asks the Oracles at Delphi if he should attack the Persians, the Oracle replies telling him (in a very ambiguous right smart) that if he fights, he will destroy a great empire (7. 12).Unbeknownst to Croesus, the empire he will destroy will be his own. However, this answer from the Oracle is one of the things that convinces Croesus to attack Persia, in a manner jumpstarting the war. It could be that Croesus was always ordain to destroy his empire, for the Pythia said, Fate that is decreed, no one can escape, non even a god. Croesus has paid for the offense of his ancestor (1. 91). This was important to remember t hroughout the book. Whether Herodotus believed it or not, the Oracles and Magi believed that one could neither change nor escape fate.In Book VII, the Oracles tell the Athenians that a wall of wood and Salamis will save Athens. When the Athenians first consulted the Pythia at Delphi, whose name was Aristonice, their transfer was foretold. They asked for a different oracle. My Lord, they asked, give us a better oracle about our fatherland be moved to pity the suppliant boughs with which we come onwards you, or we will never go away from your shrine scarce remain right here till we die (7. 141). The priestess replied No Athena cannot continue great Zeus of Olympus With many eloquent words and all her cunning counsel. To you I declare again this word, and make it as iron All shall be taken by foemen, whatever within his border Cecrops contains, and whatever the glades of sacred Cithaeron. Yet to Tritogeneia hall Zeus, loud-voiced, give a present, A wall of wood, which alone shall m eet unsacked by the foemen Well shall it serve yourselves and your children in days that shall be. Do not abide the charge of horse and foot that come on you, A aright host from the landward side, but withdraw beforehand it. Turn your back in retreat on another day you shall face them.Salamis, isle divine, you shall wrap up many children of women, Either when seed is sown or again when the harvest is gathered. (Herodotus, 1. 141) The Athenians argued about what this meant, whether they will be victorious or defeated at Salamis. Themistocles cogitate that, if the oracle referred to Salamis as isle divine that must mean that the Greeks would be victorious, because, he argued, it would take in been referred to as O Cruel Salamis if all of its inhabitants were going to die. He then convinced the men to prepare for a sea battle. The wall of wood would be their ships. The Athenians agreed with Themistocles, if, for no other reason, than his explanation sounded better than that offered by the oracle-interpreters. Hope, they saw, was better than despair. In this instance, the Oracles do offer some idea of what will come, but the oracle-interpreters, whose purpose is to interpret, are essentially ignored. Themistocles heard what was said and picked out a phrase by which he explained the rest of the prophecy. The Athenians believed what they wanted to believe, which was that Salamis would be a Greek victory, and the ships made up the wall of wood to which the Oracle referred. While the Athenians do not listen to what the oracle-interpreters had to say, they did take to heart what was told to them by the Oracle, and this led to many of the Greek peoples unitingArgos sided with Persia Gelon of Syracuse refused to help unless he could lead, thereby offending the Spartans Corcyra assembled men and ships and went to the war, but sat on the sidelines watching and Crete refused to join. The united Greece, led by Leonidas, decided to fight at Thermopylae, where Leonidas was killed. However, after this, the war goes to Salamis, where the Greeks, surrounded, battle the Persians, forcing Xerxes to retreat with his army.Dreams also play a particular role in Herodotus The History. Like the Oracles, dreams influence people to make certain decisions. And like the situations with the Oracles, fate also plays a role. These people had these particular proposition dreams because they were fated to make said decisions. The dreams, possibly, were the only ways to convince them, or to ensure that fate run its course. So was the case with Astyages, who dreamt of his daughter, Mandane, making water so greatly that she filled all his city and floodedall of Asia (1. 107). Astyages immediately went to visit the Magi who were dream interpreters.Fearing that this meant she would have more powerful offspring, he married her, not to a Mede, but to a lesser, Persian man. However, fate would not back down. After his daughter was married to the Persian, Astyages had another dre am. It seemed to him that out of his daughters washbowl parts there grew a vine, and the vine shaded all Asia (1. 108). Astyages again went to dream interpreters among the Magi, who suggested that this dream meant that Mandane who was now, in fact, pregnant would have a child who would become king in the place of Astyages. This is the point in the story where fate really comes into play.Much like the story of Oedipus, attempting to control or otherwise act in a way opposed to, fate seems to be exactly what allows for fate to run its course. Astyages takes the child, a son, when it is born and hands him over to a kinsman, Harpagus, and orders Harpagus to kill the child. Harpagus agrees, but cannot bring himself to do such a thing. Harpagus, in turn, hands the child over to Mitradates, a slave herdsmen of Astyages. Harpagus also passes on the task of murdering the child. When Mitradates gets home with the child, he tells his wife, Cyno, the task with which he had been charged.Cyno, however, had given birth that day to a child who was stillborn, and she suggested that they place the dead child on the mountain to die and raise Mandanes child as their own. This way, they still get to raise a child, and the innocent boy is not killed. By removing the child from his mother, and handing him over to his death, Astyages is creating the path for which the foreseen future can now happen. peerless day, the boy was playing with children in town and they named him their king, and he reprimanded one of the children, a son of a man of higher rank than his herdsman father. They were all brought before Astyages, and this is how he came to learn that the boy had not been killed. When the Astyages learned that the boy, who would be called Cyrus, but was not yet at this time called Cyrus, was still alive, at first he was angry with Harpagus, and he killed Harpagus son and fed his flesh to Harpagus. Then, after consulting with the Magi, he believed that the dream had already come true, since the boy was named king. As it is, the Magi told him, the dream has issued in something measly we are ourselves quite confident and bid you be the same.So send the boy away from your sight to the Persians and his parents (1. 120). When Astyages sent the boy away to live with his true parents, Harpagus watched him recrudesce into a man, and when Cyrus was a young man, Harpagus sent him a message, suggesting that he overthrow Astyages, for he Astyages had ordered Cyrus death. Had it not been for himself and the gods, Harpagus argued, Cyrus would have been murdered when he was an infant. In this way, the dream explained by the Magi came to be fulfilled. In Book VII, Xerxes dreams of a man coming to him and reprimanding him for his indecision. Are you changing your mind, Persian, and will not lead your army against Greece after you have bidden the Persians to gather their host? the man asks Xerxes. You will not do well, so to alter your counsel, now will he who stands bef ore you prove forgiving. As you have resolved by day to do, that is the road for you to tread (1. 153). Thomas Harrison, in his book, Divinity and History The Religion of Herodotus, argues that misinterpretation of the Oracles was the rule, rather than the exception. Harrison essentially discredits the oracles because they are so ambiguous. Not only do such instances of mistaken interpretation reinforcethe fated nature of the eventual outcome, but at the same time they come forth their audience with the tools to explain apparent non-fulfillment the story of Croesus serves to illustrate both the possibility of fulfillment against ones expectations andthat of dormant oracles, long forgotten, being fulfilled nonetheless. To a point, this makes sense. The Oracles are constantly, it seems almost intentionally, ambiguous, and the message is almost always misinterpreted, often times to the listeners detriment. The Oracles and dreams play a crucial role in Herodotus The History. The book i s driven mostly by reactions to things either heard from an Oracle, or experienced in a dream. Sometimes attemptunsuccessfullyto change what was foretold, and sometimes trying cause what is believed to be the meaning. Fate, however, has run its course. No matter how many times someone tried to change what was prophesied, whatever they did to change it just ended up being the cause of that which was trying to be avoided.

I prefer Firebox for its speed in producing results. Both browsers allow me to choose the tools and options I use most often, as well as to acquire whether to remember and store browsing history. As I use the network frequently, to conduct re hunt club, It Is often necessary to go back and find a ancestor that I used during a previous session or on a different day. Both browsers allow me to view the history, to find sites I visited recently. However, Internet Explorer offers a history side bar, which is more convenient for accessing browsing history. While this feature is handy, I do not necessarily care for, or need, the supererogatory bells and whistles of Internet Explorer. The ability to customize the background screen, choosing from a variety of scenes, may be more important to the user who spends most of his or her time on the internet socializing or visiting social networking sites. While I do engage in social networking online, it is not my main activity. Therefore, featur es such as the customizable screen are of little Importance to me.Both Firebox and Internet Explorer allow me to conduct a search utilize Google. While It Is not the only search engine available, It can help me with research, by allowing me to find scholarly resources, without necessarily accessing a university library or database. Google scholar often provides extensive lists of resources in an efficacious manner. Google Chrome is a fast browser, it brings up search results quickly and the results appear to be ranked in order of their applicability, to the content in the search request. When using Firebox, I can produce the same search results as with Google Chrome. Internet Explorer, on the other hand, often produces search results that are neither useful or on topic, in my opinion. I conducted a search on drug use in America using Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. Firebox produced identical results as Google Chrome. Internet Explorer, on the other hand, produced a group of li stings that appear to be advertise drug addiction treatments and centers, rather than producing the results of available and current research on drug use.Internet Explorer appears to be geared more toward advertising and the average casual user. While I may shop and read product reviews online, I do not need to be inundated with advertising, when conducting research away from Internet Explorer for the past several years. I am not against advertising on the internet. If I choose not to view pop up ads, I can adjust all browsers accordingly. Sometimes, accessing various features of online course require turn the pop up blocker off. This has not been a problem with Firebox. It is a problem with Internet Explorer, as I am always fearful that ads leave behind mom up as soon as I navigate away from the course site. Internet Explorer often changes the search options, such as automatically making ask. Com or world my search engine of choice, without my permission. Firebox and Google Chro me do not. When this occurs with Internet Explorer, I become fearful of spare and mallard being loaded onto my computer. To me, this practice is dishonest and creates a lack of trust. Conclusion Overall, I prefer to have greater control over the advertising and search options of my browser.I do not find Internet Explorer to be as friendly, for conducting research and gathering useful, relevant information. This is the majority of time spent online for me. For those who are casual users or who use the internet solely for entertainment, Internet Explorer may not seem so bothersome. While Google Chrome is fast and gives me the results I want, it is often not compatible with academic sites or with online course applications. This is probably the one critical factor that prevents me from using the browser more frequently. Google Chrome Internet Explorer Firebox

When leaders find themselves stressed out, their wisdom is challenged because it is those very moments when an individual gives in to his weaknesses. But for leaders who are experienced enough they would very well know what to do when they find themselves in the middle of a stressful situation.Congruently, leaders would often times cause stress themselves as they aim for more efficient, effective and frugal ways of leading the community or the team. In this light, stress becomes a tool of the leader to talk through ones hat new paths, new solutions and innovations to help the team reach their goals. In many ways, stress and leadership has endlessly been in tandem with each other. He never endorsed the Su preme judicial systems ruling in 1954, Brown v. Board of Education (Kansas), that racially segregated schools were unconstitutional, and he failed to use his moral authority as president to urge speedy compliance with the courts decision. In 1957, he did send federal troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, when mobs tried to block the desegregation of Central High School, but he did so because he had a constitutional obligation to uphold the law, not needfully because he supported integration.Eisenhower also refrained from publicly criticizing Senator Joseph McCarthy, who used his powers to abuse the civil liberties of dozens of citizens whom he incriminate of anti-American activities. Eisenhower privately despised McCarthy, and he worked behind the scenes with congressional leaders to erode McCarthys influence. Eisenhowers substantiating tactics eventually worked, but they also prolonged the senators power, since many people concluded that even the president was un resulting to confron t McCarthy. Eisenhower also frequently authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to undertake secret interventions to overthrow unfriendly governments or protect reliable anti-Communist leaders whose power was thre atened. After the French granted independency to the nations of Indochina (Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam), Eisenhower employed U. S. power and prestige to help create a non-Communist government in South Vietnam, an action that would exert disastrous long-term consequences. The death of Joseph Stalin (1953), during Eisenhowers first term in office, caused shifts in relations with Russia. Eisenhower waged peace, hoping to break U. S. Soviet relations. Eriksonâۉ„¢s Timeline Essay

Erik countersigns Timeline Erik Eriksons approach to personality development is different from Jane Loevingers theory. Although their approaches are different their perspectives corresponds in how compassionate individuality develop across the bread and butterspan. Loevingers theory brings attention to how people perceive their experiences and make sense of them whereas, Eriksons psychosocial development is focused more on the what instead of the how. He questions what types of psychosocial dilemmas a person confronts in his or her lifetime.Erikson proposes that important facets of human individuality are best understood in developmental time. Adolescence and young matureness is the fifth stage in Eriksons developmental design. This stage of identity versus role confusion is a period of immense questioning. Generativity versus stagnation is the seventh stage in Eriksons developmental design. It is the period that comes after(prenominal) young adulthood but before the senior yea rs (McAdams, 2006). One important characteristics of Generativity versus stagnation is the shoot to care for and be studyed by others. I am experiencing this stage.Other characteristics of generative expression are bringing up children with good character and integrity, and the need to pass on family values to the next times (McAdams, 2006). How I grass leave a legacy for succeeding generations is the central questionposed during this period in my life. How can I fashion a gift? (McAdams, 2006, p. 348). I have sought to answer that question in several ways. I have been keeping a journal for the past 10 years because I want to share significant peak experiences with my children, grandchildren, and succeeding generations.I want them to know my challenges, my successes, and my insights into major life events. Further, I can continue the legacy my parents and grandparents passed down to me by teaching my offspring how to make quilts, my nannas favorite pie, and quote my fathers fav orite poems. My son, David is in the adolescence and young adult stage. He is a young father of a 16 month old boy. The psychosocial issue of this stage is identity versus role confusion. This stage is characterized by questioning who am I and how do I fit in this adult world Additionally, David is questioning what type of parent am I and, how will I wind up my son. He is questioning the values and beliefs taught to him during childhood. Davids desire to express his unique self seems to be in conflict with his desire to conform to what his family, and society in general expects of him (McAdams, 2006). David recently informed his father and me that he will non force his son to go to church or be a billet of organized religion. He expressed his displeasure with hypocritical leadership in churches and the old-fashioned principles they teach. Although his young family does not attend church, I have observed David reading his son bible stories and singing biblical songs to his son that we taught him. He seems to be resolving his conflict by deciding which values and traditions he will absolve and which ones he will pass on to his son. In Erik Eriksons Generativity versus stagnation stage adults feel the need to be needed and the need to care for others.

Compare and contrast Blake and Wordsworthâۉ„¢s view of London Essay

The poets Blake and Wordsworth both wrote poems ab give away Englands capital city, London. The poets themselves each came from disparate backgrounds which may convey influenced their view of London. Wordsworth was born and brought up in the Lake District and spent the majority of his life there, which may take on led him to concentrate on the natural features of London. In contrast Blake was more aware of the industry and scantness of the capital City. He had lived any his life in London, receiving little formal schooling and even witnessing the remainder of his brother from consumption.Wordsworths poem Composed upon Westminster Bridge presents a smooth and relaxed view looking crossways the water and the city. He writes about what he sees and views London as a majestic royal palace. Wordsworth reflects upon his offspring with deep felt emotion, seeing it as a spiritual place of peace. Dull would be the mortal who could pass by, a sight so touching in its majesty. He descr ibes a supererogatory morning when the city seems to be asleep and is in awe of the tranquillity neer saw I, never felt, a alleviate so deep. Wordsworth is therefore commenting on the natural watcher that he sees alternatively than the daily life behind this scene. In contrast Blakes poem is entitled London. talk directly about the city itself it is the account of a per give-and-take walking down the street adage what he sees. He is more concerned with the mass who make up the City. Instead of seeing beauty he sees pain in the emotions of the people he meets. In every cry of every objet dart. Blake concentrates on the oppression and need of the city. He blames the church service and authorities for their escape of attention and care for the people of London. Every blackening Church appals. The banknote of the poem shows a lack of awareness some unspoiled inside while pain goes on outside, and the hapless soldiers sigh runs in kindred down Palace walls. In keeping with t his pessimistic view, Blakes poem is structured in a methodical and measured tone. It is written to a steady beat in four stanzas. This has the feel of a walking pace as he wanders around the city viewing its misery. Blake uses repetition to emphasise his item in every cry, in every voice. It is a formal bleak approach endowment the bare facts as he sees them.Wordsworths poem is altogether more flamboyant. As a amative poet he writes this poem in the form of a sonnet. This style is mainly used in fill out poetry. This structure emphasises the way Wordsworth concentrates on the physical aspects Wordsworth views around him. One line flows into another in an inner way. It is descriptive and reflective but does not attempt to look beyond the outward appearance all bright and glittering in the smokeless air.Wordsworth as a rich man, the son of a lawyer, views London on face value. He looks down upon the city from his lofty position unaware of the need below. His tone is in effect( p) of grandeur earth has not anything to show more fair. He feels travel in his spirit and in harmony with his environment. Wordsworths tone is full of wonder, focusing on the princely buildings and seeing the city itself as a living being full of emotion.Blake expresses his thoughts of frustration and sadness. He describes chartered streets and chartered Thames, which emphasises how everything has been taken over and oppressed. He comes from a lower middle class background the son of a hosier and the tone of this poem expresses his awareness of the poverty around him marks of weakness, marks of woes. This sadness turns to enmity as the poem proceeds, criticising the Church and even the corruption of spousals. And blights with plagues the marriage hearse. There is a hopelessness and despondency expressed within this poem.Blake refers to mind-forged manacles, the metaphorical chains in which the peoples minds are held. This is typical of the minus images used throughout. The o ne beat rhythm and child-like tone emphasises the steady march towards an inescapable fate. This language underlines the lack of control which people have, their lives grinding out a pre-set pattern. Everything is owned each chartered street. Even the Church is blackening, sinful, cruel, with a lack of purity and care. The oxymoron marriage hearse shows the conflict within society the hypocrisy of marriage whilst poverty encourages prostitution to flourish the youthful harlots utter. The words are severe and shocking, exaggerating the problem to gain our attention blasts the new-born infants tear. The language used by Wordsworth is full of splendour never did the sunshine more beautifully steep. He paints pictures with his words, using the images of the shining sun, the gliding river the beauty of the morning. He extends a simile of the city by personifying it as captive in sleep. The city now doth like a garment where the beauty of the morning, silent, bare. Wordsworth creates a feeling of awe and wonder at the beauty of creation. He uses the metaphor of the city like a mighty heart lying still. The sounds evoked by Wordsworth poem are very peaceful and calm the river glideth, the morning silent. In contrast Blake uses sharp sounds which are onomatopoeic in nature blasts, curse, cry. He uses a strong heavy rhythm emotive of the oppression felt with crying force and mark in every face I meet, marks of weakness, marks of woe. The tone of Wordsworths poem is soft and lilting a sight so touching, a calm so deep. This is set against the harsh cry of Blakes London. The approach used by these deuce writers promotes a different response from the reader. Wordsworths flowery imagery encourages a warm view of London. He is optimistic in his approach, concentrating as he does upon the immediate sights and sounds of a peaceful morning scene. Blake however conjures up a feeling of misery for the plight of the people of London locked in a prison of poverty which he blam es on the establishment who have no care for their situation. Blake concentrates on social injustice, perhaps borne out of his own upbringing, whilst Wordsworth seems unaware of anything but the natural beauty of the environment and not its inhabitants. Gegraphy and complaint -- Based on your annotated bibliography, you will write a to increase your understanding of - Research Paper casingBackground Information Countries which have a higher economical ability such as Canada and the linked States record different types of distempers and wellness issues from those that argon bugger offing. Because of this, it is easier to study and establish the dynamics that surround the individuals health. In the same note, countries that ar located in tropics are apparent to have the citizens develop diseases such as malaria and opposite climatic diseases while those away such as Canada are likely to experience to have cancerous related diseases (MacLeod, Finlayson, Pell & Findlay, 1999). The environment, which the individual lives in, can also determine the level of health that the residents can have. People living in urban playing areas are likely to have diseases such as asthma and lung infection because of the constant polluted environ ment that they have to cope with everyday. Ethnicity and the background culture are also determinants of the type of medication which the flock seek .The exercise will give an example of the Ghanaian immigrants who live in Europe who seek the biomedical attention while they also seek the preference traditional medicine. The four-fold section of this study will look at the factors that surround the health areas dimension mostly by basing the argument on the area of study that is rural Canada. This is because the dynamics that surround the rural setting in the country have for a long time been seen to be not equitable. With this is in mind, the majority of the sources that this study is going to use have a basis in the Canadian health sector but with a global insight on the aspects that concern disease and its relationship with geography. The Concept of Geography and Disease Population Density and Disease Cities around the world are growing at an exponential rate. The aspect of housing and accommodation is becoming a challenge because of the universe in surge. Canada which is a first world country has a relatively organized urban area as Jerret, Eyles, Dufournaud and Birch (2003) illustrate. The New York City on its part is one of the most populated cities in the world and because of this its neighborhoods such as Bronx and Brooklyn have had a serious problem with new infections such as for asthma and lung cancer. This is because of the fact that fumes and smoke emanates from factories and the industrial section of the city. The situation is also made worse by the exposure and contact with unhygienic conditions present in the place. The high population density of other places in the African continent such as Nairobi and Johannesburg has seen the increase of slums and other informal settlements. This consequently impli es that the hygienic conditions that are shared in this place are stretched to the limit. Poor sanitation coupled up with unsafe drinking water and poor education on sanitation sees the increase of diseases such as cholera dysentery and other diseases. Population increase makes it difficult to plan on different sections that affect the people such as the health aspects. Virtual groups and how they effect group communication Research Paper

Virtual assorts and how they effect group communication - Research Paper Example sort of they connect through communication technologies and computers, provide an unparalleled amount of flexibility (Powell, Piccoli & Ives, 2004) and are unified still by a shared function or rationale (Lurey & Raisinghani, 2000). This paper aims to review the literature and search that focuses on the characteristics of keen realistic groups in an effort to determine how virtual group interaction affects carrying out and to make comparisons between performance of small virtual teams and more traditional co-located small teams. Small groups usually consist of three to fifteen elements (Socha, 1997) with the ideal size being five to seven (Cragan & Wright, 1999) with every member having an influence on each other and are interdependent. In other words if something occurs to or influences bingle member it impacts on other group members the behaviour of whiz group member effects both(prenomina l) the way other group members relate to each other (relational behavior) and how they finish the task or micturate their goal (task behavior) (Bertcher, 1994). According to Myers & Anderson (2008) interdependence is a fundamental characteristic of a small group and at the end of the day will influence how the group achieves its goal or task which is the initial and most(prenominal) important reason the group is formed. Tasks can be additive, wherein the small group members go bad separately on one component of a task and when all components are completed they amalgamate their endeavors to produce one ultimate consequent, or they can be conjunctive, wherein the group works together to produce the final outcome (Steiner, 1972). In the case of additive tasks the small group is not interdependent until the end when they unite their work but with conjunctive tasks they are interdependent from start to finish. Apart from the task, interdependence and size, Myers & Anderson (2008) cla imed that small groups contain three further features of communication which are norms, identity and maunder (p.9). He further claimed that the norms of small group behavior are the rules or regulations pertaining to members of the group, and can be social, procedural or task based, and if not upheld by a group member sanctions may be imposed on that member. Norms therefore shape small group behavior and govern the way in which group members undertake their task, interact and create their identity - the corporeal and psychological limits that differentiate small groups and group members. Communication is the most important feature of small groups in terms of defining their identity and consists of four different types of conversation as posited by Cragan & Wright (1999) that include character reference talk, problem-solving talk, encounter talk and consciousness-raising talk. Myers & Anderson (2008) claimed that a small group that is able to balance all four talk types will be m ore effective and succeed in its task, whereas a small group that places as well much emphasis on one type over another or does not use any one type may alienate some members and not accomplish their task. To summarize the characteristics of small group communication there are three major qualities size, interdependence and task, and three minor qualities norms, talk and identity, that influence the way in which group members interact and communicate. Research shows that much has been suggested and purported in terms of virtual communication

Potential Role of The Yuan as the New Reserve Currency Essay

Potential Role of The Yuan as the new-sprung(prenominal) Reserve Currency - Essay ExampleThese atomic number 18 large economic base, political st cleverness, and a pathetic rate of inflation (IMF, WB & World Bank Group, 2009). It should also be backed by a joint supranational monetary authority that is capable of asserting compliance among its member states, which must in turn comprise a significant number of nations in the world (Finance and Development, 2009). The currency must be sellable or tradable without limitation (Levine, 2009). Since the currency is supposed to be, according to Levine, a safe haven for former(a) currencies, they should be able to have access to huge sums of it without restriction. This is because inadequate stand-ins of the currency would compromise the ability of that countrified to trade in that currency or participate in international transactions denominated in it. The international currencys home economic and political systems must also be perpe tual enough and fundamentally sound to support international transactions among countries. In order to engender impudence in the reserve currency, the valuation of said currency must be transparent to all for them to remove holding that currency in significant quantities. Recent developments that triggered the search for a substitute It has already been mentioned that the large current account deficit and huge public debt of the United States are primarily answerable for the weakness of the dollar as the primary medium of exchange. Ordinarily,...This paper presents a comprehensive analysis, that aims to determine whether or not the renminbi would provide a real substitute for the dollar as principal international reserve currenc y within the next ten years, and whether such a substitution will stabilize the globular currency market and prevent further recurrences of financial crises as the world had experienced in the past. The international reserve currency performs three vital functions of money that is, as medium of exchange, as unit of account, and as store of value. There are many reasons for the yuan to be considered as a possible alternative, the most important of which is its position as the top trading country in the world. It has amassed some 3 one million million million dollars worth of international reserves, two-thirds of which is in U.S. dollars, thus this country is capable of exerting economic pressure on the U. S. annually it experiences record current account surpluses, compared to the U.S.s accumulating current account deficit and public debt.Despite these positivist factors, there are also serious concerns. Chinas financial markets are still passing restricted, and its currency is still unable to trade in open market, let alone be freely converted into other currencies. Other than currency concerns, Chinas economic and political infrastructure are in need of a fundamental change. Corruption must be addressed, and the system made more transparent, in order to afford investors and fund managers a clearer view by which to assess the political risks of the currency.

International Trade & Banking - Essay eccentricAccording to Mishkin, globalization is essentially about economic integration, which implies the opening up of national economies to the external influx of goods, services. Contrary to earlier beliefs, globalization is hardly a new phenomenon, dating back to the end of the nineteenth century and the age of industrialization. The globalization system, unlike the Cold War system, is not static, but a impulsive ongoing process globalization involves integration of markets, nation-states and technologies to a degree never witnessed before in a flair that is enabling individuals, corporations and nation-states to reach around the world farther, faster, deeper and cheaper than ever before, and in a way that is excessively producing a powerful backlash from those brutalized or left behind by this new system. Yet, counterbalance today it is too early to say that globalization has achieved its peak. Central banks are still in their way but far from achieving real financial globalization. The latter presupposes having a single global currency and a single global financial authority. According to Way, independent central banks produce sharply lower pomposity rates where Left cabinets are prevalent but at a cost of increasing unemployment. In the absence of financial stability and global financial homogeneity, central banks acquire a new habit of adjusting their decisions and exchange rates policies to the needs of the international financial community, including the issues of currency convertibility.
